Ich habe ihn vor kurzem nach langer Zeit wiedergelesen und m\u00f6chte meinen Lesern ein paar Ausz\u00fcge nicht vorenthalten. Sie sind alle  dem <em>Essay on Man <\/em>aus dem Jahr 1734 entnommen. Ich lasse sie un\u00fcbersetzt, weil durch das Prosaische viel von der Kraft und der Sch\u00f6nheit der Verse verlorengehen w\u00fcrde.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00dcber das Leben: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Life can little more supply<br>Than just to look about us and to die. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00dcber die Welt:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>A mighty maze! but not without a plan.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Der Mensch &#8211; <em>so weak, so little, and so blind &#8211; <\/em>sieht immer nur einen kleinen Teil der Welt:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>   Tis&nbsp;but a part we see, and not a whole.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Und dann kommen diese wunderbaren Verse \u00fcber die Hoffnung &#8211; und die Mahnung, <em>dem\u00fctig<\/em> zu hoffen:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Hope humbly then; with trembling pinions soar;<br>Wait the great teacher Death, and God adore!<br>What future bliss, he gives not thee to know,<br>But gives that Hope to be thy blessing now. <br>Hope springs eternal in the human breast:<br>Man never Is, but always To be blest:<br>The soul, uneasy and confin&#8217;d from home,<br>Rests and expatiates in a life to come.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Das erinnert an das sch\u00f6ne Wort des Augustinus:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Fecisti nos ad te, et inquietum est cor nostrum, donec requisescat in te.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Zu dir hin hast du uns erschaffen, und ruhelos ist unser Herz, bis es Ruhe findet in dir.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Wie seicht, wie platt, wie billig wirkt da alles, was der heutige Atheismus zu bieten hat!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Alexander Pope (1688-1744) war ein gl\u00e4nzender Vertreter der fr\u00fchen englischen Aufkl\u00e4rung.
